Overcoming Learning Challenges: A Journey to Success
How the Right Learning Environment Can Unlock Your Potential.
When I was in grade school, I struggled with reading and concentrating in classes. I was never officially diagnosed with dyslexia, but looking back, I believe I may have had a combination of dyslexia and ADD. Reading was difficult for me, and I often read the first few letters of a word and assumed I knew what it said, skipping over the whole word itself, which caused some struggles with reading comprehension. I especially disliked reading out loud in front of others because it made me very self-conscious. I still do not love reading out loud, but over the years, I have worked to overcome that fear.
When I started middle school, I had more opportunities to move around, and become more active during classes, which made it easier for me to concentrate and stay focused. That added flexibility provided me an environment where I could learn more successfully. I went from receiving Cs and Ds in grade school to earning As in middle school, high school and college. My guidance counselor in middle school told me I would never go to college. Despite that, I graduated college with a 3.75 GPA. My experience showed me how much the right learning environment can make a difference. I think the adaptability my teachers gave me helped me become a better student which then led into being a successful business owner and leader of a team.
Sometimes I think there can be an assumption that if you are not a strong reader, you are not smart. That was not the case for me. While reading was a challenge, I excelled in math. Numbers and calculations have always come naturally to me, and being able to do math in my head has been a great asset throughout my life. It has been especially helpful in starting and running my business. Struggling in one area does not define what you are capable of in other areas.
