Understanding Dyslexia: Turning Awareness into Opportunity

October 23, 2026•1 min read

This October, help break the stigma around dyslexia and empower young learners to reach their full potential.

Every student has a story worth sharing! 💙 Watch this inspiring video featuring a student with dyslexia and learn how the right support can make a difference:

Did you know that roughly 1 in 5 people is affected by dyslexia? As the most common learning disability, dyslexia touches families, classrooms, and communities everywhere. Yet despite how common it is, dyslexia is still widely misunderstood.

National Dyslexia Awareness Month this October is an opportunity to change that.

Dyslexia affects how the brain processes written and spoken language, but it is not a reflection of intelligence, effort, or potential. In fact, many individuals with dyslexia are creative thinkers, strong problem-solvers, and exceptionally skilled at seeing ideas and solutions from a different perspective.

Awareness matters because understanding leads to action. By replacing outdated myths with facts, we can help students feel supported rather than singled out. We can advocate for better teacher training and science-based reading instruction that gives educators the tools to recognize dyslexia earlier and teach students in ways that work for how they learn.

Most importantly, we can remind young people with dyslexia that they are not alone—and dyslexia does not define what they can accomplish.

At the David Staenberg Family Foundation (DSFF), we believe every student deserves the opportunity and resources to succeed. Through our scholarship fund, we help support dyslexic youth as they pursue their education, build confidence, and discover just how much they are capable of achieving.

This October, help us turn awareness into opportunity.
